SimLingo

SimLingo is a model designed to integrate large language models (LLMs) into autonomous driving systems, aiming to improve generalization and explainability. The model addresses the challenge of achieving both high driving performance and extensive language understanding, which has been difficult with existing methods that focus on either driving or vision-language understanding. SimLingo proposes a model capable of handling three different tasks: closed-loop driving, vision-language understanding, and language-action alignment. The model is based on a vision language model (VLM) and operates using only camera input, excluding expensive sensors like LiDAR. SimLingo achieves state-of-the-art performance on the CARLA simulator and the Bench2Drive benchmark, and it was the winning entry at the CARLA challenge 2024. The model also demonstrates strong results in a variety of language-related tasks while maintaining high driving performance.
